Water distribution
The network that delivers finished drinking water to customers, and the certification series for operating it.
Water distribution is the system of mains, service lines, valves, hydrants, storage tanks, and pump stations that carries finished drinking water from the treatment plant to every tap in the service area. Once water leaves the plant, protecting its quality becomes the distribution system's job: maintaining pressure, preventing contamination, managing storage, and keeping the network in good repair. Distribution is where the public most directly experiences the water system, through reliable service at the faucet.
Water distribution is also its own standardized certification series, separate from water treatment, with its own exams and class levels. The content emphasizes hydraulics, pipe materials and installation, valves and hydrants, storage facilities, pressure management, cross-connection control, water quality in the network, safety, and applied math. Operators in this series spend much of their time in the field rather than inside a plant.
The work suits people who like being outdoors, solving physical problems, and seeing immediate results. A repaired main, a exercised valve, or a restored service is tangible in a way office work never is. Distribution operators also interact with the public more than most water professionals, because their work happens on streets and in neighborhoods rather than behind a fence.
