Common questions
How many questions are on the operator certification exam?
The standardized WPI exams have 100 scored multiple-choice questions, and up to 10 additional unscored pretest questions may appear.
How long is the operator exam?
3 hours, which works out to roughly a minute and a half per question.
What score do you need to pass?
A score of 70 or greater passes.
Do you get a formula sheet?
Yes. A formula and conversion table containing mathematical formulas and common abbreviations is provided with the exam. That changes what studying means: the skill is recognizing which formula a word problem wants and converting units cleanly, not memorization.
Which exam series exist?
Water Treatment, Water Distribution, Wastewater Treatment, Wastewater Collection, each at four class levels. Class names and prerequisites vary by state.
Who actually certifies me?
Your state certifying authority. More than 40 of them use the WPI standardized exams, but eligibility, experience requirements, grade names and renewal rules are set state by state. Confirm with your state before applying.
