Certified operator

A certified operator is a person who has met a state certifying authority's requirements, typically a combination of education, verified experience, and a passing score on the appropriate exam, and has been granted a credential to operate water or wastewater systems. Certification is not a diploma or a course completion certificate; it is a state-issued professional credential that carries legal weight. Public systems are required to be operated by, or under the responsible charge of, appropriately certified people.

Certification is specific to a series, such as water treatment, water distribution, wastewater treatment, or wastewater collection, and to a class level within that series. An operator may hold multiple certifications across series and levels, and many career-minded operators deliberately stack them over time. Higher levels generally require more experience and qualify the holder to run larger or more complex systems.

Maintaining certification is an ongoing obligation rather than a one-time achievement. Certificates must be renewed on a cycle set by the state, and renewal typically requires documented continuing education. Because every state sets its own eligibility, renewal, and reciprocity rules, operators should treat their state certifying authority as the definitive source for what their credential requires, what it permits them to operate, and how to keep it in good standing.
